Woodinville, WA - Arriving at our doorstep one sunny afternoon, was a box from Redhook. Featured inside this carefully packaged box a bottle of their newest annual release, Chinook Copperhook Copper Ale. Many of you after reading this sentence might stand up and correct us, but you aren't hearing things, its now available all year.

Influenced by the Rhineland lagers of the old country, this Altbier is intended to reflect the classic Northern German lagers of the Rhineland. Using a slight cheat, in the form of Ale yeast, this beer was a treat to pour into a slender pilsner-like glass.

 Under analysis the beer appears close to the Northern German Altbier (or German-style) with a clear, filtered, copper / orange body. As its poured into the glass it produces a head that is beaded with tiny pearls of protein. The beer settles over time into the glass, leaving behind a trail of lace to the beers surface.

Swirling the glass is around, we detect spicy notes, mixed in with caramel, minor fruity esters, and a roasted aroma. Taking a sip as we peered into the glass we initially were greeted by caramel and nutty malt character with initial medium-dry spicy character, that finishes out sweet. Overall the beer fails to feel heavy on the tongue with its medium to mild amount of body.

If you find this on the shelf you should definitely give it a try, or at a minimum put this side by side with an Alaskan Amber (blindfolded of course) and see for yourself if you think it better.
