About the Phinney Neighborhood Association
The buildings that make up the Phinney Neighborhood Center have been serving the community since 1904 when the wooden building opened as the John B. Allen Elementary School, part of the Seattle School District. The two-story building was named for one of Washington's first senators and housed 278 students at the end of its first year. In 1917, the District opened the brick building and enrollment increased, peaking at 758 in 1933.
The school closed in June 1981 and opened again in September 1981 as the Phinney Neighborhood Center.
Over the years, the Phinney Neighbor hood Center has become the focus of Seattle’s Phinney/Greenwood neighborhood, offering a wide variety of programs and activities for the whole community, with particular emphasis on programs for children, families and education.
Funding for the Association and the Center comes from facilities rentals, program fees, membership and a number of fundraising events. The Soup Kitchens are supported by the City of Seattle Human Services Department.
You can help support the Association and all of its programs with a tax-deductible contribution. Donate now.
