Event Planner: OR: 12/15 Breakside Brews presents the Winter Formal

Aw, the high school dance. Some would call it a ball, while others call it 'the' dance, and even more recall it being dubbed  a formal. Whatever term that is used the ceremony is the same, dancing and dressing up. But then this is a beer website. Which means that a majority of you have since left the confines of high school and are instead focusing on employment, bills, and the weekend. And like most weekends there are weekly tasks to perform and beers to enjoyed.

So why not switch things up and instead stop into the Melody Ballroom (615 SE Alder St. Portland, Oregon 97214) to dress-up, have a few drinks, and maybe test out those dancing feet. The event is sponsored by Breakside brewery and will feature 10+ next to the dance floor. Music will be provided courtesy “DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid” and “Boy Eats Drum Machine”

Dress "Portland Formal" and bring your dancing shoes to compete for prizes like: Sharpest Dressed and Best Couples Dance or vote to crown the King and Queen of the ball. Or just get your picture taken by our on site photographer. With a full liquor bar and 10+ beers on tap from Breakside Brewery as well as friends Burnside Brewery and The Commons Brewery with some rare barrel-aged beer tappings throughout the evening you wont go thirsty. Snacks will be included but we recommend eating dinner ahead of the formal.

Tickets are $12 or $20 with 2 drink tickets. Recognizing the charitable time of year, the event promoters are encouraging people to bring a (unwrapped) new toy for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots charity. In exchange for your donation you will receive a drink ticket.

About DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid

DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid have played a transformative role in the Portland, Oregon club scene for over a decade, presiding over two of Portland’s longest-running and most successful dance parties, as well as hosting a cult radio show on KBOO community radio. They are most known for incinerating dance floors with the South Asian sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood, but the duo scours the globe for any hard-hitting music that combines local musical traditions with window-rattling production. After making a name for themselves in their hometown’s raucous house party circuit, DJ Anjali & The Incredible Kid introduced the Portland, Oregon nightclub scene to the sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood on New Year’s Eve 2000. After a series of residencies, beginning with a six-month residency at the legendary Blackbird, the duo began hosting their ANDAZ dance parties in July of 2002. The party’s focus on hardcore Panjabi Bhangra and the latest electronic confections from the Bollywood film industry continue to pack the dance floor after 10 years

About Boy Eats Drum Machine

Boy Eats Drum Machine is a singular figure of the West. He does things his own way, thank you very much, and does those things well enough to run his own one-man gang.  Sometimes his voice is low and dry like the great Oregon deserts. Other times it resonates warmly, as though reflecting off the hills. He’s a turntablist’s turntablist, robbing breaks and sound textures from vinyl even after most of his contemporaries switched to laptops. He often mixes together twangy guitars, soulful blasts of tenor saxophone, and bassy, soundtrack worthy, analog synth. He’s an artist-outlaw.

His shows feature a mixture of multi-instrumental-turntable-wizardry and performance art, as he moves effortlessly from sax, to drum, to dj station. BEDM audiences are comprised of ferociously moving bodies, curious onlookers, and shining faces nodding in time to expertly placed beats. His songs are succinct, interesting, and strut into jammy terrain only on such occasions that call for it. Though Boy Eats Drum Machine has his finger on the sample button, his sound remains distinctively organic. His home-spun compositions set a cozy table, with tales of escape nibbling at your heart strings.
