Double R Hop Ranches

About Double R Hop Ranches

Hop production has been, for many years, the soul of Double R. We strive to produce a quality product for the brewing industries of the world.

The story of the Riel family’s involvement in agriculture began in the 1890’s with the immigration of Wilfred Riel from Canada to Moxee, Wa. Wilfred worked for the Moxee Hop Company (based out of New York), and soon had a son named Willie. As a young man, Willie, and two brothers, decided to start their careers as farmers by leasing 80 acres of property on the Yakima Reservation; pitching a tent on the corner of this property, and growing potatoes for a season.

Double ‘R’ Hop Ranches was officially started a bit later, in 1945, by Willie A. Riel. From Moxee, Wa he moved his new, young family, including sons Jerome and Leonard Riel, along with wife Yvette, to the current location in Harrah, Wa. Along with hops and potatoes, Willie and sons produced Hereford cattle too.

Jerome and Leonard operated the farm for many years, with the help and guidance of Willie. They diversified the farm’s production to include various varieties of apples. Soon, grandsons became involved, and today Double ‘R’ is owned and operated by Kevin, Keith, and Steve Riel. Concord grapes and various other row crops have been added to our crop portfolio. The most recent additions at Double ‘R’ include great grandchildren, Jessica and Zackary Riel, joining the family business.

The tradition of Pacific Northwest Family hop farms dates back to the 19th century. Our family has been part of this history for 5 generations.

Yakima Chief Ranches

About yakima chief ranches

Yakima Chief Ranches (YCR) is an integrated crop management company that specializes in breeding new hop varieties for the global brewing industry. YCR exists to create and sustain value in the hop market— from the family farm to the drinkers of great beer worldwide. The company was started in the late 1980’s as three hop-farming families, the Carpenters, Smiths, and Perraults, came together to form a new hop production and research farm in the Yakima Valley under the name Yakima Chief Ranches. The late Charles “Chuck” Zimmerman was the initial breeding program director for Yakima Chief Ranches, with a directive to develop new hop varieties. Initial breeding results from the program were fruitful, leading to the selection and release of several new hop brands.

The YCR breeding program joined forces with the John I. Haas, Inc. breeding program to form Hop Breeding Company (HBC) in 2003. HBC’s mission is to develop pest-resistant and disease-resistant hop brands with strong commercial qualities. This hop breeding powerhouse takes advantage of the combined resources of both companies through full integration of breeding efforts. All brands from the breeding program are released jointly.

Chelan Valley Hops

About Chelan Valley Hops

The only commercial hop farm with irrigation rights to the glacial waters of Lake Chelan.

Chelan Valley Hops farm is located approximately 7 miles from the town of Chelan, Washington in Eastern Washington, 180 miles from Seattle. Originally an apple orchard, our farm reserved its Lake Chelan irrigation rights to feed our crops with the pristine glacial waters of Lake Chelan. The result is plump, bright, vibrant hop cones that we harvest once a year. We only sell whole, wet cones with our goal of “Bine to Brew” within 36 hours of harvest.

Brulotte Farms

About Brulotte Farms

Reggie Brulotte, a sixth generation hop farmer, can trace her roots in the industry back to 1885. Brulotte Farms, Inc. was formally established by her grandfather, Roland, in 1944 when the family settled in Toppenish, WA. Since then, the Brulottes have created a lasting legacy with a reputation for delivering a vast selection of premium hops. Reggie is an active member in the hop industry, serving on several boards and committees for the Washington Hop Commission and spent 12 years as the Washington representative for the Hop Research Council and Hop Plant Protection Committee.

The Brulottes are passionate about meeting the unique needs of breweries as they constantly add diversity to their already long list of varieties grown. Brulotte Farms currently offers a large selection of hops, growing more than 20 hop varieties. They embrace new innovative hops that enter the industry, and also enjoy growing older varietals such as Comet that many new craft brewers have never seen. As the brewing industry grows, the Brulotte family works diligently to increase harvest capacity to allow for acreage expansion and the continuous flow of hop forward beers.

Reggie has received the International Order of the Hop Award. In addition, she earned top honors in the 2014 Hop Quality Group Cascade Cup for the exceptional production of Cascade hops, and was named a top finalist in 2015. The Brulottes are inspired by the passion of brewers and beer drinkers alike and enjoy supplying them with a quality, key ingredient.

Growing Veterans Farm

About Growing Veterans Farm

Growing Veterans was founded by a combat wounded USMC veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, Christopher Brown, and a former mental health counselor turned farmer, Christina Wolf. Together, they agreed using the farm as the catalyst for human connection and veteran reintegration could have a powerful impact on the health and well being of not only vets returning home, but the world. They were crazy enough to believe it could happen, and just smart enough to pull it off.
