From an outstanding group of talented applicants, Annie Johnson of PicoBrew (Seattle, WA) has been named recipient of the 2020 American Brewers Guild scholarship. Anniewill be attending ABG’s Intensive Brewing Science & Engineering course that runs from January to June 2020. The Intensive Brewing Science & Engineering course is a 22-week distance education program with a final week of residential instruction in Middlebury, VT. The course covers all the fundamentals of beer production and quality assurance with a special emphasis on practical issues.
Annie Johnson is Brewmaster-in-residence at PicoBrew, a small product manufacturing company which designs and manufactures small scale brewing and distilling equipment. Annie is a distinguished homebrewer who has entered and medaled in over 100 competitions. Top honors include 2004 Queen of Beer, 2012 Pilsner Urquell Master Homebrewer, and 2013 American Homebrewers Association “Homebrewer of the Year’. At PicoBrew, she has contributed dozens of award-winning recipes to the PicoBrew recipe library and continues to pioneer new techniques and processes in the PicoBrew lab. Annie is also a deeply committed to the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), climbing to the rank of BJCP National. About Annie, the Selection Committee lauded her “absolute dedication and passion to the homebrewing community with the ability to inspire and encourage others to rise to new heights. For certain, the craft brewing world needs more people like Annie.” “If the awards she has earned weren’t convincing enough, the accolades from her industry references sealed it. Clearly, Annie’s passion is infectious and her energy unbounded.” Added another Selection Committee member: ”The Glen Hay Falconer Foundation ideals are embodied in Annie – the deep homebrewing roots and enduring connection with the craft brewing community. Taking all the passion, creativity, and commitment that Annie has demonstrated over the years and layering in formal brewing education will benefit not just Annie but everyone in her wider community.”
The American Brewers Guild is a premier school for the craft brewing industry dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning experience that focuses on the technical, scientific, and operational matters and issues that brewers face in a craft brewing environment. This year marks the eleventh year of collaboration between the Falconer Foundation and the American Brewers Guild. The Falconer Foundation has granted 42 scholarships since 2004 and is dedicated to promoting knowledge and expertise in the craft brewing industry in memory and honor of Glen Hay Falconer.
